tips for staying cool this summer - My First Gym

Summer can get up to highs of 48℃, resulting in us parents frantically, always looking for ways to stay cool (or in other words, how to stop the kids moaning!). December through to February is just unbearably hot, humid, and downright uncomfortable.

We’ve wilted down some tips, tricks and tactics to keep you all as cool as a cucumber over these few scorching months. Check them out here:

1 – Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Never underestimate how crucial hydration is. It is very important to keep hydrated throughout the day, especially in the Summer months as your body temperature reacts differently in the heat. Dehydration can cause headaches, heat exhaustion, heat rashes and/or heat strokes, which is all too common with both children and adults. Ensure your kids always have their water bottle at all times, which they drink and re-fill from when empty.

If you find it difficult to get your kids drinking water, you could make a game out of it, make some fancy ice cubes or have a dedicated water dispenser full with infused water for the whole family. Win win!

2 – Get Drenched! Think back to when you were a kid, what were you doing in the summer? Whether it was – hitting the pool frequently trying to learn how to swim or just splashing about, constant water balloon fights around the neighbourhood or playing with the sprinklers in the front garden – you would always have fun. The play possibilities are endless with water, an easy way to stay hydrated.

3 – Air-conditioners are your BFFs – Air-conditioners are a perfect excuse to keep up your extracurricular activities without the unbearable heat. Places like your local public library, or local MyFirstGym are always full of fun and cool! Find a local MyFirstGym here.

4 – Summer Clothes – Keep yours and your family’s summer clothes cool and light. By keeping everything light and airy, it will prevent the risk of overheating (combined with our other tips and tricks!) The best fabrics to find for summer are usually mesh or light cotton. Meaning that when your little princess is begging to wear that long sleeved princess dress that’s her favourite or your little prince is begging to wear that thick soccer jersey (you know it’s going to happen), educate them and make sure they understand the risks of wearing the wrong clothes for that particular season. Maybe next time.

5 – Stay cool – One way to stay cool this summer is with these homemade frozen treats! Check out these awesome homemade popsicle recipes that the whole family will indulge!

If you find it difficult to find the time to make these, you can keep it super simple. Grab an ice cube tray, some cocktail sticks (or something similar), and pour in your favourite drink like sugar-free lemonade or juice

6 – Avoid the heat as much as you can – Overexposure to the sun, humidity and sun can cause dramatic problems. Always check the weather in the morning, and if possible avoid spending long amounts of time outside between about 12pm – 3pm.  If you do, try to stay in the shade as much as possible and remember to always wear sun cream!

You don’t always have to be hot and bothered in the Summer months – staying cool is a more fun and reasonable option! Plus, with these tips, tricks and weekly trip to your own air conditioned MyFirstGym, you’re on track to having your coolest summer yet!
